Description

Clifton House is situated on ample private acreage  located on the shores of Lake Ontario, only minutes from Waupoos Cider and Del-Gatto Estates Winery. Marvel at your private 1000 feet of pebble beach and 9 acres of land on the site of a former boys' camp. The property offers exceptional 180-degree views of Lake Ontario and offers a large dock for swimming and boating.

Due to Prince Edward County bylaws, this property sleeps maximum 12 guests and up to 6 children (age 9 and under). 2 dogs allowed upon confirm (see below).

This area is well-known haven for cyclists and is close to a number of local wineries such as Waupoos Winery, Devils Wishbone, Del-Gatto Estates, and County Cider. Sandbanks Provincial Park can be reached in about 40 minutes by car, as can many other lesser-known swimming locales (Little Bluff, Point Traverse). Waupoos Marina can be reached by car in about 5 minutes.

The house has been enjoyed as a summer vacation spot by the Owner and family for many years and is a cottage style split level home with deck and outdoor dining, screened in gazebo overlooking the water, a TV with Roku / Netflix and bar area on the lower level with a walkout to the water. There is central a/c in the main house. The renovated cabin with 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom is a short walk away. There are fans here but no a/c. Property
Clifton House is big, comfortable, well-equipped, clean, quiet/private, and situated on a little piece of heaven on Earth. The views of the lake are like nothing Ive ever seen before. The cottage is private and the property is HUGE. The whole thing used to be a summer camp. You can see the old cabins across the soccer field (yes, there is some kind of large soccer field as part of the property). The property is also very, very close to a cemetery. I can confidently say that despite the old cabins and cemetery, there were no ghosts that bothered us during our stay :) We were 4 adults and 3 young kids (ages 5, 3, and 1). We spent 5-7 hours a day in the water. We swam, snorkelled, built rock structures on the beach, frolicked on inflatable toys wed brought, used our kayak (our own), and just enjoyed the panoramic view of Lake Ontario. The water entry is gradual, but rocky (small and medium sized rocks - water shoes are a must). It gives way to sand after about 20 meters, but water shoes are a must for the first part, especially for kids. My father (65, bad knees) was fine to enter the water as he could hold onto the dock while walking on the rocks. The rest of us just walked in. With water shoes, the water was absolutely ideal. It was even warm (early July). As for the indoor space, it is spacious. We had planned for two adults to stay in the one-bedroom cabin that is also on the property, but we ended up all being very comfortable in the main house. We visited the cabin, and found it to be quite hot. Im sure it would be fine at night - there were good quality fans in the cabin that could be used. Also, the owner later explained some upgrades they are planning to be in place for 2021 to cool down that cabin, which I think would be great. Speaking of cool, the main house has central AC, and I gotta say, that was really nice. The property and house stay quite cool because of the breezes (to illustrate this, it was 40 degrees in Picton, but we were perfectly comfortable on the lawn and in the water... it felt no hotter than maybe 27 to us), but it was still really nice to slip into the house after a long day of fun in the sun and to sleep in a cool, not-humid/not-buggy house. The kitchen is well equipped. You can tell that the owners spend time here - mixing bowls, wine glasses, high quality pots, oven mitts, utensils, etc. Things you need in order to cook, but dont always have in rental properties... this place had it all. Theres even a second full sized fridge in the basement/bar area. Very handy for a big family like mine. Speaking of that, we appreciated that linens were included. The sheets, blankets and bath towels were of good quality and it was nice not to have to bring all of that with us. The cottage was sparkling clean when we arrived. The furniture was comfortable, everything was really, really great. We are familiar with the area from past trips, and this place is very well located for wineries, Picton, Sandbanks, etc. However, we barely left the property because a) many things were closed due to COVID; and b) we didnt want to leave. We just wanted to play in the water or relax in the main house. I recommend this property to larger families, especially those who love to swim (with water shoes). My friends were jealous of my Instagram posts with the insanely beautiful views of the lake in the background (come on, admit it, we all want that from our vacation). We absolutely plan to return.

The team at sand banks were wonderful. We booked before the pandemic and were not sure if we would even be able to go on our vacation. They were great at their response time and keeping us up to date.

We could not have asked for a better week my family had a wonderful time. My niece learnt how to swim, we were able to share some great days on the water and one rainy day in the cottage playing games. 100% amazing.

Important Info about Wifi

Clifton House has reliable wifi at speeds of around 5MBs/second, which is fine for Netflix, WhatsApp calls, internet browsing etc. It is recommended that guests use their Netflix on standard definition rather than high definition as it will take slightly longer to buffer movies. Videoconferencing like Microsoft Teams and Zoom is definitely doable but is not as fast as in urban areas.
